Keratin Straightening, Keratin Smoothing, and Chemical Straightening

Keratin Smoothing / Straightening

ANDO Salon specializes in Keratin Smoothing (smoothing / straightening of curly hair). Keratin Smoothing and chemical straightening range in cost from $250-500 depending on hair length and the type of hair process you need.

ANDO Salon’s Keratin process and Straightening  are based on Korean products and our techniques come from South Korea as well.

Keratin applications come in two options. The first option eliminates curl completely and permanently (technically, it only works on the hair to which it was applied, so new hair growth will be curly). The second option keeps a “bit” of curl if you have quite curly hair, but it does make your hair smoother and helps eliminate frizz, tangles, and can help to recover breakage.

How Does Chemical Hair Straightening Work?

We apply a chemical softener on your hair and straighten your hair using a flat iron. This can help eliminate problems with tangling, frizz, and curling quite well. Keep in mind this option is for someone who wants completely straight hair.

How Does Keratin Hair Straightening Work?

Essentially, Keratin treatments fill in the porosity of your hair with keratin, an essential protein in hair. Highly porous hair causes tangles, frizz, and breakage. Since the structure of human hair naturally contains keratin, a Keratin treatment applies additional keratin to the hair and is “locked in” to the shaft with a flat iron.

How Does Keratin Hair Smoothing Work?

You don’t have to completely eliminate the curl! Some people love a bit of curl and so do we. This option is great for people who want to reduce the amount of curl without straightening it completely. Keratin smoothing treatments work similarly to Keratin Straightening treatments but exclude the straightening step.

What Do I Need To Do?

When you visit us, we diagnose your hair and help guide you to a choice that is the best fit for you.

If you have extremely curly hair which has never had a chemical process and you want to eliminate curl/completely straighten, then we will likely recommend chemical straightening.

If you have had a chemical process before and are concerned about damage, Keratin straightening may be your best option.

And as noted above, if simply want to keep the curl but eliminate tangle and frizz, a Keratin smoothing treatment may be the recommended option.

How Long Does Keratin Smoothing Last?

This answer depends on factors in your hair’s genetics and your current hair condition. Normally, people who have had colour and/or highlights within the last 2 years can expect their hair to keep its changes a bit longer. On the 2nd and 3rd applications, you can expect to gain an additional month per treatment, on average. We highly recommend that a treatment be renewed every 2 to 3 months after the 3rd treatment.

Who Should NOT Do Keratin or Chemical Straightening?

If your hair has already had highlights, which often calls for bleach, we cannot offer chemical straightening. You do have the option of Keratin smoothing. It is only advisable to work with virgin hair or coloured hair that did not require bleach, since chemical softeners require non-bleached hair.

How Long Does The Process Take?

It depends on how much hair you have! These are some average processing times:

  • Keratin Smoothing – 3-4 hours
  • Keratin Straightening – 5-6 hours
  • Chemical Straightening – 3-4 hours
